Given Information:- Variable Variable Value Annual Demand D 31,200 units Daily Demand d 120 units Daily Production (in 8 hours) p 960 units Desired Lot Size (1 hour of production) Q_p 120 units Holding Cost per Unit per Year H $12 Setup Labor Cost per Hour S $20 Step 1: Setup Cost Calculation process: Explanation In order to calculate the setup cost, one had to multiply the square of 120 (14400) by $12 and deduct a fraction that represented the difference between the production and demand rates. The result was $151,200. After multiplying 2 by 31,200, the denominator was 62,400. The setup cost came out to be $2.42 when the numerator and denominator were divided. This amount is the cost of setting up production processes and equipment prior to starting manufacturing activities, which is essential for maximizing operational efficiency. Step 2: Calculate the setup time: Explanation To achieve the desired lot size, it's essential to determine the appropriate setup time, which is the time required to prepare the production equipment for a specific manufacturing run. In this scenario, the setup time is calculated by dividing the setup cost by the hourly labor rate, which is $20 per hour. The setup cost, quantified at $2.42, is divided by the hourly labor rate to yield 0.12 hours. To provide a more practical measure, the setup time is converted from hours to minutes. Multiplying 0.12 hours by 60 minutes per hour results in a setup time of 7.26 minutes. This implies that to efficiently achieve the desired lot size, the production equipment needs to undergo setup procedures for approximately 7.26 minutes before initiating the manufacturing process. By adhering to this calculated setup time, manufacturers can optimize production efficiency and ensure the timely fulfillment of production requirements. Final Answer The setup time and cost were determined through a systematic calculation process. Firstly, the setup cost was computed by multiplying the square of 120 (14400) by $12 and adjusting for the demand rate relative to the production rate, resulting in $151,200. The denominator, obtained by multiplying 2 by 31,200, equaled 62,400. Dividing the numerator by the denominator yielded the setup cost of $2.42. This figure signifies the expense involved in preparing production equipment and processes before initiating manufacturing operations. Additionally, the setup time was calculated by dividing the setup cost by the hourly labor rate of $20 per hour. This yielded 0.12 hours, which when converted to minutes, equates to 7.26 minutes. These calculations are pivotal for optimizing operational efficiency and achieving the desired lot size.
